The 2019 - 2020 Season

For the 2019/2020 Season we have in store a varied and enjoyable series of concerts featuring first class players from around the world. Some are making return visits and others playing in Darlington for the first time.

We begin on 5th October with the return of Alex Lomeiko, the brilliant violinist who played for us in 2015. The Gildas String Quartet follow in November with a programme linking Purcell with Benjamin Britten's second quartet, which marked the 250th anniversary of Purcell's death.

In the new year we have the award winning cellist Jamal Aliyev, followed in February by the Pelléas Ensemble (harp, flute and viola), the violist being the wonderful Luba Tunnicliffe who gave us a memorable concert in 2018.

March sees the welcome return of the Sacconi String Quartet; their third visit (they first came in 2005). What's more their line-up is the same as then, probably currently the longest unchanged string quartet in the country, if not wider afield. They are very good too.

Our season ends with the Denman Street Quartet, four clarinets. Normally we avoid repeating the same work too soon, but we make an exception as, interestingly, one of the works they will play (Mendelssohn Opus 12) will have been heard by us performed more conventionally by the Sacconi just a month before. This should be a contrast not to be missed!
